The Office of Sustainability is currently hiring for their outreach and advocacy coordinator as well as their communications coordinator. Sustainability has extended their application deadline for the positions to Jan. 17, 2014. Both positions pay $12 an hour, 15 hours a week, with flexible hours. Students are required to have a 2.7 grade point average among other minimum qualifications.
The outreach and advocacy coordinator focuses on student engagement, networking, advocacy, events and legislation. Soliciting student engagement takes the form of petitions, initiatives, class presentations and staying up to date on opportunities for students to get involved. Internally, this position interacts heavily with Bellevue College’s Associated Student Government, Office of Student Legislative Affairs, Student Science Association, and Office of Sustainability. Externally, the Outreach and Advocacy Coordinator will meet with various organizations such as Washington Environmental Association, Forterra, Seattle Alliance and the Sierra Club. In the interest of coordinating with partners, travel to Olympia may be necessary.
Both Patrick Green, program manager for the Office of Sustainability, and Sophia Trinh, outgoing outreach and advocacy coordinator for the Office of Sustainability acknowledge that the position is greatly defined by the individual who fills it, thus making the projects somewhat flexible. While the Office of Sustainability, has no lobbying rights and cannot speak for students, the position still coordinates legislative involvement alongside the OSLA and the ASG. Trinh sees one of the greatest benefits of being employed through this position to be having the opportunity to “get paid for something that you love to do and … also get experience.”
The minimum requirements for the position are that students must have above a 2.7 GPA, have completed 24 credits and must be enrolled in a minimum of six credits.
The communications coordinator is oriented around web publishing, media, website maintenance, social media and, if capable, graphic editing. The outgoing communications coordinator for the office of sustainability, Beautiful Existence, explains the position to manage “not only Sustainability’s social media, blog and newsletter content on a regular basis but coordinates its overall voice through each and every word, email, response, request and image every day and all of the time.” It is required that students have at least one year of experience in two of the positions areas. In order to apply, applicants must provide a cover letter, transcript and resume. For the communications position, students are asked to provide samples of their work.
