The Library Media Center is now accepting entries for the 2013-2014 12th Annual BC Reads! after having chosen Rebecca Skloots’ “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” as this year’s selection. BC Reads!, sponsored by the LMC in Partnership with the Bellevue College Bookstore, offers scholarship opportunities to any full or part-time BC students. Two $1000 scholarships are available for spring quarter, one of which is reserved exclusively for students enrolled in the developmental English program.
Students who read the selection are asked to create a presentation of original work that draws on “insightful inferences —whether intuitive or analytical—from the text.” Entries can take a wide range of formats such as an essay, visual interpretation, multimedia display, dance or musical interpretation and more.
“The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” was selected this year for its topics that are relevant to current events and situations students currently experience.
“[‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks’] brings a lot of current situations into play … it goes into a look at healthcare, healthcare in the 1950s and the racial situation there … [and] who owns tissue when your bodily tissue is taken from you,” said Wilma Dougherty, a reference librarian at the LMC.
The deadline for entries to receive the scholarship is Feb. 3, 2014. Students wishing to learn more details about the contest and entry requirements should contact the LMC, D126.
