Quaintly tucked away at the ridge with a patch of stores just off Redmond Way is a café called SoulFood Books. Upon walking into the café, I felt invited and intrigued. Carved wood trinkets, instruments and furniture fill the space. Homemade jewelry and local honey, candles and intricate java scents diffuse in the air. The building is home to cases of books waiting to be adopted into a new family. The visual, olfactory and aural sensations provide a welcomed overload; you want to dig deeper and discover what’s inside.
Towards the counter, you’ll feast your eyes on a menu that urges you to purchase a treat. Delicious drinks are put to the test of your taste buds. They offer a delectable dirty chai (chai tea latte with a shot of espresso), a delicate Hippie on the Beach coconut tea latte, various pastries, that are frequently allergy-friendly, and so much more. The members that work behind the counter will greet your with smiles and friendly, familiar faces. You can ask them to choose a drink for you if you’re feeling indecisive. They’ll ask your mood, what tastes you crave, or any range of questions that can help them concoct your specialty.
Step further into SoulFood and you’ll notice guitars strung up on the walls, some held in customers’ creative hands. There are bongos and djembes scattered all around waiting to be thumped. There are wooden tables and chairs scattered about, multiple leather sofas and love-seats and an appealing little step-up stage often decked with a microphone and stand. SoulFood offers a monthly open-mic, an occasional free poetry open-mic night, tarot reading, drum circles, storytelling and so much more.
The atmosphere at SoulFood captures the relaxing yet stimulating and encouraging aspects of home. The people who walk into SoulFood are all welcoming and completely without sneering judgment. Everyone knows they have a place, and everyone feels comfortable, even when all the couches are crammed and all the seats filled up. SoulFood is a warm slice of peace and a heaping serving of content.
