The Bulldogs have done fairly well in the past, but Coach Eggers wants them to focus on the future
With the new women’s basketball season starting, the Bellevue College squad is looking for a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges title. The team is now under Jeremy Eggers who is in his first full year as the head coach. The team last year had a fairly successful season finishing 7th in the NWAACC tournament. Now this year, they plan on reaching much higher. A new motto and a new coach together can only help the girls succeed.
The team is working with the motto of a single word, “focus”.
Coach Jeremy Eggers wants the girls to remember what is important about improving: “We just have to keep focused on getting better every day. Not looking back at past games or past injuries or past practices. We want them to keep looking forward.” “The team takes every day in stride knowing that every day is a new day to improve and the past has already happened.”
One big thing that the team has had to overcome even this early in the season is injuries. The team has already had two major injuries.
The first is a sophomore Maddison Rankin, who is out due to a knee injury, and sophomore Kaitlynn Bunger who is out due to an ankle injury.
Both players were integral parts of the team. Maddison is the captain of the team, but her injury is not keeping her away from helping her team. “Maddison has been kind of an emotional leader for us,” said Eggers. Even without them for now, the team has found new ways to pick up the pace.
The team has already started its play with a few tournaments including the Bellevue Crossover where the team placed fifth, and the Skagit tourney where they took home the gold. The team has also just started their league play recently. In their first game, Bellevue went up against Olympic and pulled out a win 56-51 in the opener.
According to Coach Eggers, the BC women’s team has a very balanced team that is able to match up well against other teams. “We don’t have a whole lot of highs or a whole lot of lows. We have kept our composure, we have kept our balance… our biggest strength is our balance” says Eggers. However, the team does have some things it really needs to work on. “Probably our biggest weakness is taking care of the basketball on the offensive side. We have got to be stronger with the basketball and limit our turnovers against no pressure,” said Eggers.
The Bellevue College women’s basketball team is on a roll right now and can make a good run at the NWAACC title if they can keep their momentum going, and the best way to support the BC women’s basketball team is to attend the games. Eggers notes, “Any home team feeds off their crowd. I think it would be huge if we could get that support for our teams.”
