At Bellevue College, there are many programs and clubs that are offered to the students. One of these clubs that sometimes goes unnoticed is the BC Cheer Squad. The BC Cheer Squad has been busy this season with men’s and women’s basketball and is currently making goals for the future.
With a squad of 12 members led by Coach Barbara Brodsky and Captain Kimberly Kitnikone, the BC Cheer Squad will be attending the NWAACC regional tournament to cheer on the BC women’s team. As well as preparing for that, the squad is also compiling goals for the upcoming year.
The BC Cheer Squad is not a competitive team, but they cheer for both men’s and women’s basketball games. During halftime, the squad does face painting for the children in attendance.
For the future, the Bellevue College Cheer Squad is aiming high. “Overall, the cheer squad members want to be more active on campus and help build school spirit,” said Brodsky, “They would like to participate in campus-wide activities and have a more visible presence on campus.”
Additionally, the squad is planning on hosting a Junior Cheer Camp this upcoming summer for elementary school aged kids. On top of this, the team would like to start working on more difficult tasks. “They also want to be able to do stunting which requires special training by certified instructors. Stunts range from basic two-legged stunts to one-legged extended stunts and high flying basket tosses,” said Brodsky.
For any student on the BC campus that is interested in becoming a part of the squad, they will be holding tryouts in the beginning of October. No prerequisites or experience is required except that anybody who tries out is enrolled at Bellevue College at least part-time. Additionally, the squad already has women and men on the team, so it is not gender specific.
