I’ve had a number of duties here at the Jibsheet this quarter: copy editor, photographer, distributor, and sometimes staff writer. When reporting the news, in print and in photos, I’ve often run into the barrier of unbiased news reporting. News writing and photo journalism are specialized forms of media creation that attempt to report the facts without the bias of the reporter, editor, or paper. I don’t believe this is possible. Even if I report “just the facts,” I still choose whom I interview, what questions to ask, which quotes to use, and the angle of the story. Similarly, I choose the subject of my photos, what moment of the action to capture, and the framing of the shot to include one thing and exclude others. Journalism
